Typeface Poster Project

Type Poster for Avenir Next Pro

Could you create a poster for a typeface using only that typeface? That's what this project set out to do. Posters typically advertise for things such as movies, plays, or concerts. This project created a poster that advertised for and showcased a chosen typeface.

The typeface that I chose to explore for this poster project was Avenir Next Pro, a typeface published by Linotype in 2004.

One aspect of this poster that would have to be absolutely perfect is how visual hierarchy is handled. The poster would have to include the name of the typeface, when it was published, who created it, what weights are available, a few paragraphs about the history of the font, and examples of the alphabet and numerals.

Digital Sketches

Through peer critique, I chose ten of my sketches to explore in a digital environment. Some of them leaned heavily into the geometric nature of the typeface, while others went in a more minimal direction. I liked several of these ideas. Avenir has some very unique letter shapes that are fun to work with. It was hard to choose where to focus my efforts.

Chosen Design Idea and Variations

Based on my opinion, as well as those I consulted, I chose the first digital sketch to work off of. I used several guides in Adobe Illustrator to make sure everything was aligned properly, allowing for visual balance.

Final Poster Design

My final design used a slightly more muted version of the yellow poster, while changing the main typeface title to white. The white title really worked well, drawing the eye to the title first. All other text flowed naturally from the giant title.
